Cinnamon Donuts

Being a mom means that sometimes you have to say no to some of the kids favorite foods. Watching what the kids eat means that you become the devil. And in more recent years with the party pack culture, our kids are being pumped with sugar in the name of celebrations. From pre school, Chloe brought home quite a number of party pack containing a lot of sweets. The day I made a fruit pack for the tuck, she was not happy as every kid complained about my healthy pack.

Chloe is my second and last born. She is a picky eater and she might as well go to be hungry if she does not like something we might be eating for diner. We clash over sugar in cereal, ice cream everyday in summer as well as not buying sweets when we go grocery shopping. I do allow them to have sweet things and this donut recipe was a hit.

She loves everything I make yet she still complain if I add orange juice to my pasta sauce. and this time she offered to help me to ice the donuts. and the great thing about her is that she is always behind me watching everything I do in hopes to be the first person to eat once I am done shooting. getting her involved and letting her measure our ingredients and mix them is more of an honor than eating.

And at least we have moved from wanting to press my camera shutter to being my hands and knowing how to place them beautiful on the scene. I have adapted this from my Dzonga donuts. and I will share a little trick that makes these more plump and cute. This recipe can be made using a ring donut cutter, just that I find the donut cutter useful when I do cookies and not get for donuts.

This post is in partnership with Supa Mama. And for this recipe I used the freezer bags as well as the baking paper. follow all the steps and you will not get this wrong.

Step 1

1st add your dry ingredients into a bowl.

Step 2

Mix the ingrediets until combined.

Step 3

Add warm water. A little at a time.

Step 4

I used a chopstick to stir, You can use a wooden spoon or scraper.

Step 5

Knead this for 10 minutes until well combined.

Step 6

Line your bowl with oil and place your dough for proving. Remember to place it in a warm place. Your bowl should be covered to to allow air in. I used a foil for this bowl. You can use cling film or a lid.

Step 7

Sprinkle a bit of flour then tip out the flour. Lining the table with the baking paper helps with sticky dough.

Step 8

Flatten the flour with your fingers and ensure that it is not too thick.

Step 9

Using a round cookie cutter to create round shapes.

Step 10

Use the back of a icing nozzle to create a small circle in the center. Do 5 at the time. (Whenever flour sits before being placed in oil, it always sticks back. I would also recommend you place the donut dough in a plate with enough space in between to avoid the dough sticking together).

Step 11

Fry a small batch at a time to avoid overcrowding. and once they turn golden brown flip over. you have to watch closer to avoid burning.

step 12

Place in a bowl with lid. Let them cool down completely before coating with Cinnamon sugar. Using the Supa mama freezer bag, I will add the sugar and cinnamon at the same time and toss to incorporate.

Step 13

Add your donuts and toss between your hands to coat them with the cinnamon sugar. Enjoy with unsweetened tea or as they are.

This recipe Makes 14 plus depending on size of a cookie or donut cutter.

Prep Time: 20 minutes

Raising Time: 30 - 40 minutes

Cooking Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients:

4 cups cake flour (all purpose flour)

10g (1 pkt) instant yeast

15ml sugar

5ml salt

2 ½ cups warm water

Canola oil for frying

Cinnamon Sugar Mixture:

1 Cup Sugar

2 1/2 tbsp white sugar.

Method:

1. Place the flour, yeast, sugar and salt into a bowl and mix together.

2. Slowly add the water, a little at a time until a soft dough forms (you may need more or less water).

3. Tip onto a floured surface, and knead until the dough is smooth and elastic 10 minutes.

4. Place into an oiled bowl and cover with cling film, allow to prove for 30 minutes or until doubled in size.

5. Tip onto a floured surface and use a rolling pin to form an even layer.

6. Use a round cookie cutter to create round shapes.

7. Steadily drop into hot oil and fry on all sides until golden brown.

8. Repeat flattening until dough is finished.

Tip: Do not over-crowd the pan when frying as it will lower the oil temperature and result in a very greasy product.

If you have small balls left over when using a donut ring, simply fry them as they are and ice them with icing sugar for a sweet desert.

Follow the steps above to get the perfect cinnamon sugar donuts.
