Berry Smoothie

I am someone who avoids waste. As we eat fruits such as strawberries and Cherries, I freeze some and use them for smoothies. My favorite fruits are strawberries, cherries, blueberries, bananas and raspberries.

Freezing your fruits allow you to have fruity smoothies without the need to add ice. I highly recommend Freezing fruits the night before before making a smoothie.

December in south Africa is season for Summer fruits. Mangoes, peaches, nectarines and other fruits are some of the seasonal fruits that make for tasty smoothies. not forgeting that smoothie mixture can be frozen to make healthy ice cream lollies that are awesome this summer. I would normally add honey and dip in chocolate to make them interesting.

This berry smoothies with milk is packed with healthy and natural ingredients! They take less than 10 minutes to make and are the perfect way to start your mornings.

This recipe makes 3-4 smoothies.

Equipment

  • Large countertop blender

Ingredients

  • 3 cups frozen mixed berries

  • 2 frozen peeled and diced bananas - or not frozen

  • 1 to 2 cups milk - plus more as needed

  • 2 tablespoons honey –

Instructions

1.                Add all ingredients into a large countertop blender. I use a 72-ounce capacity blender.

2.                Blend all ingredients until smooth or until desired consistency. If too thick, add more milk as needed. Serve immediately. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Use frozen berries to make sure that the smoothies are cold and that they have the right consistency.

  • Banana: I like to freeze the bananas (peeled and diced), but you can use it not frozen as well.

  • Milk: Use any type of milk you like. I like 2 percent or whole milk, almond milk, oat milk, and soy milk.

  • Prep ahead – Freeze prepped ingredients: Pack berries and diced bananas in a sealed freezer-friendly bag, air removed, and freeze for 2-3 months. When ready to enjoy, simply blend the frozen fruit with milk, yogurt, and honey.

  • Make ahead – Freezing blended smoothies: Transfer smoothies to mason jars, leaving one inch at the top as they can expand. Seal tightly and freeze for up to 1 month. Thaw in the fridge overnight.

Substitutions and variations:

  • Milk: Dairy milk, almond milk, oat milk, soy milk, etc.

  • Toppings: Fresh berries, mint, cacao nibs,  granola, almonds, etc.

  • Other add-ons: Try chia seeds, hemp seeds, flax seeds, pumkin seeds and sunflower seeds.
